Capsule wardrobe #64 - scarf necklace how-to

Mid June is a magical time of year, all across the South of France the lavender is coming out, creating big purple tufts in gardens and fields. For me, this is the true beginning of the summer ahead.

Once the temperatures start climbing, it is time to explore different ways of enjoying scarves.. wearing them as sashes, belts, tunics and tops presents a wonderful change and brings them out in different ways. Tying them into a necklace is bold and fun, and at the same time light and breezy to wear.. perfect for a warm summer's day!

Capsule pieces: cream tank and blue jeans
Shoes: blue patent leather pumps
Accessories: Hermès 'Cent Plis de Miao' 90 Carré, MaiTai Collection horn bracelet in ecru and MT Collection waterfall necklace in the new indigo (available from mid July, and can be pre-ordered now. For details, please click here)
Scarf tying method: see video below (for a print version please click here)
Scarf ring: MaiTai Collection petite horn scarf ring in honey (ends can be secured in a double knot instead)

Starting point: basic bias fold, then continue as shown in the video below:

For those who live in very hot climates, a collier knot variation of the above look is a cool alternative: instead of securing the end behind the neck, they are attached to the straps of a top, which avoids almost all skin contact. Please click here for a how-to.
Collier knot secured with moyenne size scarf rings
I will be away for a couple of weeks, and on my trip, I'll be putting the latest member of the MaiTai Collection to test, the Scarf Travel Pochette. I have been searching over a long time for something other than plastic zip-lock bags, or having my scarves slide and tumble in my suitcase.. in the end, I decided to design my own. The scarf travel pochette opens like a book, where each page is a perfect compartment to hold a scarf, up to the size of a 90 Carré. Storing, viewing and and choosing the silks is easy, practical and fast, and since the pochette is made of fabric, is light weight too. The travel pochettes will become available by mid July. For more info on how to pre-order, please click here

Wishing everyone a wonderful and happy summer time, looking forward to seeing you again soon! xx

  1. YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS! :D Not only is your look awesome - so cool and chic at the same time, but this Scarf Travel Pochette leaves me with my mouth wide open. It's so lovely yet also so practical and therefore an absolute "Must have"! Once again you've outdone yourself and I'm sending a humongous champagne toast in your direction. Safe travels, dearest MaiTai - xox, Macs

  2. Cent Plis! My dearest love :-)

This is a gorgeous look, MT. And the new indigo necklace is delicious.

How do you get your scarves wrinkle-free after knotting them into a style like that? Your scarves are always so pristine. I'd love to try this knot, but I'm a wee bit scared of doing some permanent damage.

    1. I thought you'd enjoy this post, dear Frances! ;)

The scarf necklace won't do any damage to your scarves, as the middle and side knots are quite loose and fluffy. Scarf rings reduce wrinkling greatly, so if you 'close' the necklace with a petite scarf ring instead of making a double knot, you'd be fine :)

  7. What a lovely post, dear MaiTai! I will have to try the necklace knot, as I've been trying to get more mileage out of scarves in the summer. Using it as a belt works, but I love the idea of some color around the neckline.
And I'm eagerly awaiting the release of the pochette - I have one that I use for my intimates, and a small one for scarves, but I'm looking forward to seeing yours!

  10. I love the idea of the scarf book! Can you design one for a single use storage of scarves in the purse(I live in a humid area, and sometimes I need to take my scarf off). Am I the only person this happens to?
The scarf you featured in your photos is one of my favorites that you own:)

    1. You really brought up a very good thought and to answer your question: No, you're not the only one this happens to. :-) Having a pouch with me (f.e. when dining out or in case of "sudden" rain) might make me feel a lot more comfortable as well and would be a great alternative to just storing the silk in my bag. xox, Macs

    2. I agree with both Sherry and Macs and think it would be nice to have a little pochette for just one scarf, in case you feel like taking it off during the day.
Thanks, Sherry, for the suggestion. xox Manuela

    3. I agree with the sisterhood! There are always occasions where I take my scarves off when I am out and about, and a little sister for the travel pochette might be the perfect storage solution. Many thanks for bringing this up, dear Sherry! hair-mess and Manuela, hugs to you girls, I love it when you chime in <3

  14. Hello MaiTai, I was introduced to your site by Faux Fuchsia and I am so pleased to find you!

I have a large collection of scarves (I have been buying them since I was 25 and am now 60) and would like to try using your scarf ring.

Most of my clothes and scarves are in cool colours or strong colours (navy, greens, black, orange, reds). I have almost no soft colours such as pastle, browns, taupe or beige.

Can you suggest the best colour scarf ring I should try? .. I am thinking dark honey horn. Would that work? I think black might be too strong but I value your opinion.

Most of my scarves are 90 x90 or bigger and I have a lot of shawls. Can you suggest the most versatile size? I thought the medium or grande might work for both my scarves and shawls as a first experiment.

Another factor to consider is that I am not tall, only short (158cm) or 5'4". So I thought a large shawl might not look sufficiently neat and compact.

Thank you for your advice... my idea is to try for a 'multi-purpose ring to start with and perhaps later try other sizes or colours.

I am also interested in the fur collar but wonder if it might look too bulky on a short person. any thoughts?

I apologise for so many questions but I am so excited to find you and your site. So much inspiration! I especially love your 'before and after' posts where you take a photo wearing no accessories and then dress yourself with scarf, jewellery, bag. It makes me realise that clothes are relatively unimportant compared with choosing good accessories.

Thank you again, Judith in Australia

    1. Dear Judith, first of all, a very warm welcome to my blog! Happy to hear you enjoy the posts, and I completely agree with your conclusion :)

Re the scarf rings, the grande is the most versatile size for 90 Carrés (Grande with 90 Carrés), but does not work with shawls (too much bulk/fabric).
For shawls, a shawl ring is perfect, and it can be used to some extend with 90 Carrés too (please click here for examples). Re color, the horn in honey is a great allround talent. With the strong colors you mentioned, a dark honey would be perfect.

Re the fur collars: I‘ve had the same question from customers similar to your height before, and the feedback after the purchase has always been positive. But please know that you can always return items which do not work for you.

Hope you’ll continue to enjoy my posts, and that we’ll see you in our chat corner again.

  15. The lavender in your garden looks so beautiful, and as you said, a reminder of the warm days of summer that follow. The color of your new waterfall necklace is one of my favorite colors, and I find it to be quite versatile, and often substitute in place of navy. And your new scarf travel pouchette - very clever. I'm afraid that I do the same as you did before: zip-lock bags. Thank you for a providing a stylish solution.
    Orange hugs, dear.

  17. Dear MaiTai

Lovely post I enjoy seeing the beautiful Lavender in full bloom. Your plants seem large how old are they? How often/when do you prune them?

    Best CBB

    1. Glad you enjoyed the lavender pics! We replace our plants every five to seven years, and by the end they are enormous (about 1.5 meters in diameter). I prune them at the end of the flowering period, cutting them back quite severly (about 5-10cm below the level where the new leaves start). The cut makes them look a bit bedraggled at first, but they will come back beautifully.

Wishing you a warm welcome home and hope you had a fabulous holiday, loved your post with the scarf necklace and lavender perfection as always and loving the travel pochette it looks devine just my style , maybe you could think of a larger sized one to keep our scarves in at home as i have now run out of space and have taken my scarves out of their boxes and keeping them stored in a drawer like in the H store but something like this would be lovely
