Reader's style challenges - how to highlight the center of a scarf

The challenge, posted by orange gaga onto a C'est la fête playtime post a few weeks ago

Here is your challenge my dear Mai Tai...create a new tie method for vintage 70 that shows the middle of the scarf.....the horse and rider are so delightful especially with the prune hat and boots but need to be able to wear it so that PART is visible....my money is ON YOUR ability to figure that out!!!
When you do please share with all of us CLF fans!!!
Hugs and kisses....

Many thanks for the request, dear orange gaga. Hope you'll like the ideas x

Most of the suggestions are also perfect to highlight the centre of 90 carrés or GMs, but I will cover the various scarf formats separately over time.

Look one: Asymmetrical wrap
detail

Look two: Basic slide

Start with the basic bias fold, then secure the ends in the basic slide

As above, with the ends flipped to the back

Variation: wind the scarf once around your neck before securing the ends

To highlight a different part of the design (below showing the horse instead of the rider), you can 'move' the basic bias fold (start out in the usual way, and when it comes to the last 'folding to the centre stage, fold into the desired direction instead)

Note: instead of the basic slide, you can also secure the ends in a criss-cross or double knot.

Look three: Cross-over knot

Start off with a much wider basic bias fold, where both the horse and the rider show

Place the scarf on your front while crossing over once. The ends are secured behind the neck with a small double knot

The 'cross-over' knot works well in combination with a blazer, jacket or cardigan,
or a sweater with a low cut neckline

  3. Mai Tai, you are a genius! These are great ideas for the 70cm's. I have the J'aime Mon Carre in the red colorway but rarely wear it. If I do it's usually as a necklace. Now I have some interesting ideas to try. The cross over knot and asymmetrical wrap should save the day. I have tried these with 90cm's and GM's. I don't know why I never tied with the 70cm's. A friend also suggested trying the petite pouf where you tie two ends, slide them through to make the pouf and then wear as a choker.

    1. I call the 'petite pouf' a 'flower knot', but petite pouf sounds just adorable! Your friend is right, the 'pp' highlights the center of a scarf (allthough for a choker the Gavroche format seems better suited) http://www.maitaispicturebook.com/2010/08/how-to-wear-hermes-gavrochepocket.html

  5. Excellent options!
Quick question....of all the folds, which one (or two) do you use the most often? I find that I gravitate to one fold in particular, so I'm just curious if you, my idol :), do as well.

    Many thnks!!

    1. I vary the knots all the time, depending on which part of the scarf's design/color I'd like to highlight. The weather, occasion and rest of the outfit play play an important role too. Overall, I probably use the criss-cross knot (incl. the criss-cross bow knot) and basic slide the most. In winter, I love wearing my scarves in combination with a scarf fur collar.

  17. A very happy new year to u MT! I am from India - the country of innumerable saree drapes :) Just subscribed to your blog and am pleasantly surprised to find so much more than just scarf knots !! Though I don't own a Hermes (yet:) I have a collection of "dupattas" - like longer wider version of stoles and various plain, batik, tie-n-dye and ombre pieces which I am now trying out in different styles... Thanx to U !
