MaiTai Collection collage #17

Posting a new collage is always such a joyous and wonderful moment. To see all the beautiful pictures, inspirational ideas and fabulous styles from around the world assembled together is so very special. It never ceases to amaze me how the modern world allows us to connect in friendship over things we are passionate about, regardless of the different cultures, time zones and geographical locations that we live in. The collages are such wonderful testimonials to this.

Thank you for sharing so generously dearest Allégra, ashiraya, Barb, barenias, Cecilia, Coco, Desert Mermaid, FauxFuchsia, happyface313, Irina H., Julie, Kaori, Macs in the City, Manuela, Marla in the OC, max_and_mol.homeandcountry, momwithatwist,  Monica, Nadine, pearlsinblueboxes, pursemelody, Sally and Tina. You are wonderful!

  1. Thank you for going to all the effort of making these collages and for your wonderful blog. I follow it religiously but I often wonder why. A Hermes scarf seems so beyond my affordability. And of course, one couldn't never just have one. Any tips of how one goes about gathering a small collection, or where to start, on a very average (South Africa..think exchange rate about 16 to 1..horrific) salary?

    1. Dear Gill,

Elegance is the way we are, the way we feel, the way we are able to look « special » just with a simple accessory or colored suit. Elegance and well-feeling is not how much money we spend to look like others… Less is more…. You can use all MaiTai wonderful ways of knotting scarves with any scarf you will find on local markets, small shops.
I feel « special » when I’ve done something important or nice for my family, people around me or if I managed to reach a goal in my job, not because I’m wearing an Hermes scarf!

You wonder why you follow this blog? Maybe just because just as MaiTai, it is a beautiful, elegant, chic, warm, quiet and friendly place. Please continue to follow it and, like us, wait impatiently for next post. Welcome to MaiTai’ swans club.

      Catherine.

    2. Wonderfully said, dear Catherine. Your thoughts really touched me as much as Gill's - happy to have you swimming on the pond with us, dear Gill. It's a source of inspiration, exchange of ideas and a platform for global friendship for me and I wouldn't want to miss any post (and all the comments). The admiration for Hermès' works of art is one thing shared by all, but not the only one. Welcome!

    3. Gill,

Not only is Catherine a very elegant woman (I've never met her, but I just know she is!), she's also very wise, so please heed her advice.

We are not about acquiring or showing off for the pure pleassure of it or to diminish someone else. Hermes happened to be the brand that brought us all together, but as Catherine wisely said, you don't specifically need Hermes to look and feel chic. I really think it's more to do with confidence and a certain joie de vivre and . . . making the effort; doing a little something extra.

MT's blog and the inspiration we draw from it brings all of us much joy, but it's gone beyond silk and baubles at this point - it's more about friendship and sharing, which is wonderful. It has far surpassed mere things. It has moved into the arena of global friendship and sharing, which when all is said and done, is far more important and meaningful than mere squares of silk, albeit quite lovely squares of silk.

So, as lovely Katja has stated, please come swim with us on our serene little pond. We welcome you with open arms . . . errrr, wings.

      Good things,
      Jerrine

    4. Dear Gill, you have an appreciation of beauty and lovely things, that is all that is required! I only own four Hermes scarves and one Cartier, acquired over many years. But I feel at home here in this oasis of elegance and congeniality, as much as if I had a closet full of Hermes (wouldn't THAT be nice). As for collecting, Hermes holds its value so buying used items may not save you a lot of money, but it is a slightly more affordable option. I echo dear Catherine and Katja in saying, Welcome!
      Warm aloha,
      Fifi

    7. Catherine,

I'm threatening to land on MT's doorstep any day now, so once I do, I'll simply steal her car and come visit you, too!

And, do not think I'm joking, lol. We really do have to meet.

      Big, big hugs,

    8. Dear Gill, I'm happy you like it here among us and like dears Catherine, Katja, Jerrine and Fifi wrote before, this place is a very special place where we share something much bigger and more valuable than a Hermes scarf. Maybe one day you will be able to buy one but as Catherine so well said, you can still be elegant and have style without a H scarf. Welcome to our wonderful sisterhood! Warm hug, Manuela

    9. Jerrine,
We'll do! Just grant me the time to comb my tousled feathers and I’ll be all yours! As you are planning to « borrow » MT’s coach and horses, bring her with you :-)))

    10. Well, Catherine, I guess it would be the decent thing to do, wouldn't it! :-).

Nah, no need to tidy those feathers. Mine are always, as you so nicely put it, "tousled," and that's on a good day.

      Hugs,
      Jerrine

    11. Dear Gill,

I understand- the 90 cm scarves are $650 here in Australia and the 70cms are $450 which is a LOT. I have bought most of mine at duty free shops at airports- so much cheaper as the Aussie dollar is always weak. If someone you trust is travelling you should get them to purchase one for you. Also there is a 2nd hand market. I know people who've bought genuine Hermes scarves this way. I just bought a maxi twilly from a friend that she'd hardly worn for half the retail price.

Before I found this blog I'd never stepped foot in an Hermes shop and didn't own any Hermes scarves.

I find Maitai very inspiring because she is so gracious and generous with her knowledge.

You will have an H scarf sooner than you think x

      Delete
    12. Dear Gill,
It can be really fun (and rewarding) to search for a scarf on the 2nd hand market. However, first you may want to have a good look on the several websites with information about designs, and how to spot fakes. My first effort turned out to be a polyester horreur. I wear it sometimes on the handle of a bag ;-)

    13. A very warm welcome to our haven of friendship and fun, dear Gill! All the swans said so beautifully.. it is true that our love for Hermes has brought us together in the first place, but the basis of our friendship has long evolved since! I'm so happy you feel at home here, and hope your wish will become true one day!

    2. Dear irrepressible Jerrine! I've aged 10 years since starting the new job (while still doing the old one), and am currently not suitable for framing! Maybe next collage or after my facelift, whichever comes first... I dream of a spa weekend, being slathered with rejuvenating plant extracts while sipping champers through a straw (shades of Haverfordgal).
      Hugs and aloha,

    3. I'm sending you a big hug, Fifi. I know exactly how you feel - overworked, overwhelmed, over everything!

You most certainly don't need a facelift, but I'd certainly join you at the Swan Spa for some R&R. In my current state, though, I'm afraid I might sip the rejuvenating plant extracts instead of the champagne! But that could work, too, right?

As the British say, stay calm and carry on (don't you just want to slap someone when you hear that?)

      Love to you,
      Jerrine

The graphic simplicity of the ring mixed with the pop of color in the cord seem like the perfect way to keep the spirit of scarf-love alive when it's a bit to hot for the real thing.
