Reader's style challenge - 'One outfit, different looks' #4

Some scarf color ways seem to be inspired straight by nature.. the coloring of the little acorn is so similar to one of my winter favorites, the Brides de Gala 90 Dip Dye. As mentioned before, black and brown are one of my favorite color combinations, and since so many of you commented or emailed me expressing enjoyment of the black pants/roll neck series, I am accessorising this trusted canvas again today, with accents in chocolate, mocca, dark honey and ebene.

The way Holsby draped her 'Les Ponts de Paris' 90 Carré into wide folds is such a beautiful example on how to give a elegant and soft touch to an all black outfit.

Almost at the same time when Laura send me a pic of her MoP pendant, I received a similar idea from CH, who used an orange H leather band to wear her grande MoP scarf ring as a necklace. Each year, the Chinese New Year falls on a different date, as it depends on solar and lunar movements. Every lunar year corresponds with one of the twelve zodiac animals, and today the year of the Dragon has begun.

Red is the most important color during the celebrations, as it symbolizes good luck. Accessorising with touches of red today, and wishing everyone a very happy Year of the Dragon!

In contrast to this series' first episode, where bright and colorful accents stood out against the black canvas, I opted for tone in tone/neutral accessories today, resulting in an overall softer look

Scarf tying method: fold your scarf into a loose and generous basic bias fold, and secure the ends in the basic slide with a MT collection shawl ring. Please click here for a how-to (for the above look, do not wrap the scarf around your neck prior to securing the ends)

Alternativly using the same scarf tying method, but wrapping the scarf once around the neck before securing the ends in the basic slide (changing from a shawl ring to a grande scarf ring), and wearing a CDC bracelet instead of the black horn.

For those interested in the difference of lipstick, today I used just a lipliner (for the outline and to fill in), followed by lip balm (instead of lipstick). I like this method because it has great staying power, while keeping the lips hydrated and soft.

I have been asked a few times to show different ways to style the same outfit, just by changing scarves and accessories. A minimalist outfit works well for this challenge (making it a great travel wardrobe too). I opted for black turtleneck sweater and a simple pair of trousers, which I'll be wearing in a few variations over the next few days and posts.

Starting with the Ex-Libris en Kimono 90 Carré. Although colorful, there is enough black (especially in the corners) for a rapport to a black outfit, which is why it has been one of my favorites this winter. Today wearing it folded into a rectangle, with the ends pulled through a shawl ring. When designing the shawl ring, it did not cross my mind to use it for other scarves than GMs, but I love the way it brings out 90 Carrés in soft pleats and drapes.

Every time I turn from the Place de la Concorde into the Rue Boissy d'Anglas it is with great anticipation.. will FSH's windows have new displays, or are they in process of re-decoration? On my last visit to Paris they were blocked with orange paper, but this time I could see from far away that new treasures were waiting to be discovered..

I don't know why french pigeons appear so photogenic, perhaps because they feed on croissants...

no more crossaints for for me though, the 'regime' has started in earnest! In the meantime, a scarf halter top (with an added cardie or jacket for warmth) is particularely forgiving in winter

With all festive decorations cleared and stowed away, the house feels fresh and ready for the New Year. It still is wonderful of course to see nature displaying baubles and berries, especially when against a clear blue sky.

I bought this coat a while ago, and am so pleased how it allows me to wear some of my scarves which I considered 'summer carrés' in winter too.

In the morning of New Year's Eve, I've cut some twigs and branches from the garden to decorate my dining table, and added some gold berries and branches, pine cones and silver twigs I used at last week's Christmas lunch. It was a gloriously warm and sunny day, and when our friends arrived, we had the apéritif and some oysters from nearby Bouzigues outside, followed by a fun and happy lunch for eleven, which lasted until it got dark

Later I changed from jeans into a dress, and settled with DH for a cosy evening by the fire, where we toasted our favorite moments of the past year with a glass of champagne. New Year's Eve was definitely one of them!

Merry Christmas!

Yesterday I have been running last minute errands in town, and as the mild temperatures continue (DS insisted on wearing a t-shirt) everyone was having their lunch outside in the sun

I have never seen so much foliage still around this time of the year

But with only one little parcel left on DS's advent calender,

and all other preparations finished, Christmas is finally here

earlier this month, the 'delivery boy' brought a wreath

which has been suspended from the kitchen ceiling

while our tree has been patiently waiting outside (we brought it in last night)

all cookies are baked

and decorated

some presents are wrapped

while others look their best without

and with the champagne chilled and the outside lights fixed, we are ready for Christmas.

Scarf it Up - Drapes

If it were not for the calender (and DS's building anticipation) I would not believe it is Christmas in five days time. With so many trees still holding onto their leaves and with another spell of mild weather, it feels more like early November than Christmas time.

Although my shawl ring collection has been out for some time, I never got round to introduce them, and since it is too warm for GMs right know, I have been playing with 90 Carrés instead.

With the shawl rings, the 90 Carrés can be worn in a loose and soft style, and the effect is more like draping than knotting. The key is to fold the scarf into a wide and loose basic bias fold, followed by securing the ends with the basic slide
As above, only looser and twisting the folded scarf before securing the ends, leaving one end longer

'All about cashmere' - Interviews with Chantal Roy, part one

During the restauration of my Ex-Libris cashmere shawl by Chantal Roy's invisible mending atelier CHANTAL RAMMENDO INVISIBILE, it was not only fascinating to learn about the amazing results and techniques of invisible mending, but I was fortunate enough to also gain a deeper understanding about cashmere in general, as Chantal Roy has been most gracious and kind in answering the many questions I had on the topic. Her knowledge and experience of these subjects is exceptional, and I am most happy and grateful that she agreed to share her advice and expertise on this blog, in form of a series of interviews.

This first part is comprehensive, but I feel it was very important to have a deeper knowledge on the subject of fibers and quality, as it will help to understand the topics which will follow (pilling, maintenance, storing etc). If you have any questions, please leave them in the comment box below.

What is cashmere, and how is it different from wool?
CR: Cashmere is a fine undercoat that usually comes from the underbelly part of goats. Cashmere fibers are hollow (like a tube), and much thinner than woolen fibres (they can go from a thickness of 11 to 18 micron, while the finest merino wool won't be thinner than 24 micron), which makes cashmere warmer and softer than wool, while at the same time lighter to wear.

Which fibers produce the more resistant cashmere yarn and fabric?
CR: Cashmere fibers usually goes from 1 to 3 inches. The longer the fibers are, the more resistant the yarn that is created when spinning.

Which fibers produce the softest and lightest cashmere yarn and fabric?
CR: In general terms, the thinner the fibre, the softer the yarn. Unfortunately, thinner fibers tend to be shorter and more fragile, and have a tendancy to break more easily.

What determines the quality of cashmere?
CR: The quality of cashmere fibers is determined by how thin and long they are. The most sought after fibres are long (resulting in a resistant yarn/fabric) and thin/fine (creating softness/ lightness). This doesn't include some very important exceptions such as baby cashmere which has shorter fibers and is the top of the quality, it also doesn't include fibers which may come from the underpart of the neck/throad of the goat that are used for some impalpable pieces of amazing quality.

What is pilling?
CR: Pilling is nothing more than shorter/broken cashmere fibers coming to the surface of a cashmere fabric, it is partly natural (cashmere always did a little bit of pilling with time ) but it can also be seen as a side effect of producing soft and light cashmere fabrics.

How is consumer demand influencing the production of cashmere fabric?
CR: Cashmere wasn't that soft in the past. It only became softer when it was well used. People like soft cashmere better, and they also want it to be light. To meet the demand, some companies started to make yarns that were more airy and less twisted. The customers liked it much better, and some brands were happy to meet the customer's expectations with this new way of spinning, as it meant that their cashmere items would weigh less, and therefore saving time and money in production.

Those who kept making cashmere the old way (by using longer and thicker fibres), were often accused at the time of producing lower quality cashmere because it was less soft, and more bulky. This was not true, as those cashmere fabrics were more resistant, and would not pill or snag easily.

What else has changed over time in the production of cashmere fabric?
CR: Cashmere is less greasy than wool, and therefore less elastic. In the past, it was therefor often woven in oil, which gave it a buttery feel, but since this method is very expensive, some producers eventually started to weave without oil (or with less oil, or with other methods). As a result, some customers missed the feeling of 'softness', but in reality, they missed the texture produced by the oil. Some producers started to compensate, and relaced the softness of the 'oily hand' by weaving a less twisted and more airy thread instead.

What is your personal view on softness?
CR: Knowing cashmere, I don't care much about it's softness if the thread feels empty..

How do CSGMs produced nowadays compare to CSGMs produced in the past?
CR: The CSGMs often feel like they have become thinner, but I remember customers complaining about the fact that the shawls were previously too bulky, and often too hot. So, just as some other brands developed their cashmere, maybe the shawls were made less heavy for various reasons. I still think the quality of the GMs is great, but because of all that has been said above, they sometimes feel a more fragile item than they were some time ago. In my experience it is the same with many brands that do cashmere, because consumers want softness above anything else. Personally, I would probably prefer the shawls thicker, but I am not so sure that all customers would feel the way I do.

Are there other factors which influence the softness/fragility of cashmere fabric?
CR: Yes, dying can influence the result a lot. The stronger/darker a color, the less soft the result. The lighter, more natural (closer to natural or natural white), the softer the shawl will be. This is the same with clothing. This is why you will probably never find a black baby cashmere sweater. I think the black dye could probably destroy a good part of the fibers. Stronger or different dyes could also be a good part of the reason why fibers break and pill, but this is just a hypothesis. This is also why there can be a great difference from year to year, from design to design, and from color way to color way.

How does the quality of cashmere compare to the past in terms of fibre?
CR: The quality of ALL cashmere has generally lowered over the years due to increase in demand. The best cashmere is found in China, not Kashmir. There is no reason for this apart from the way the goats are fed I suppose. Until the end of the eighties and beginning of the nineties, China had huge stocks of unsold cashmere. (For the purpose of price control, they would decide how much was to be sold every year, and keep the finest quality for themselves). Now China can't meet demand. In the mountains some areas are overgrazed by numerous goats, and the grass doesn't grow anymore. The problem now is how to feed a goat properly, since goats that aren't well fed won’t give high quality fibers. This doesn't mean that great cashmere doesn't exist anymore, but it does mean that it is much more expensive and much scarcer than in the past.

Which brands produce good quality cashmere in your opinion?
CR: As of now, some brands like Hermès, Loro Piana, Chanel, Brunello Cuccinelli, and also Fedeli are currently making excellent quality cashmere, but these are just examples and there are several others. That’s generally speaking of course.

Today wearing - winter pastels, part two

Provençal façades come in hundreds of soft pastel shades, some exuding tranquility, others warmth and hospitality, but always calming in summer, and illuminating in winter.

Capsule wardrobe # 53 - a new member to the family

I have been longing for a pumpkin colored bag for a few years, and have been tempted many times by orange and potiron. Allthough stunningly beautiful, I always found them too bright on me, no matter with style or leather I tried

Last week, my search came to a happy end (the extra wide bolduc could not be cuter, making the box look like an oversized chocolate box)

Welcome to the newest member to the Picotin family, Ms Sanguine

I had high hopes for this color when it came out, but in the leathers I saw, it never quite matched the color I had in my head.. until I was shown it in Taurillon Clemence, which brought it out in the exact deep and saturated way I wished for.

Today, we had a cool and crip winter's day, and to keep warm, I wore a thin black v-neck sweater under the scarf halter top.

Christmas Pudding

Last Saturday at the market, I bought the ingredients for making Christmas pudding, an event I look very much forward to every year, as it signals the start of all Christmas preparations. Having been away so much, I am a bit later this year than normal (in cooler climates one could start as early as October, or even September, as the puddings keep for months..as long as stored in a dry and cool place)

The list of ingredients is long, but it is very easy to make, and it feels good to have already ticked one item off the long Christmas lunch list..

It's done in two steps, here are the ingredients for the first:
• 90 gr (3.17 oz) sultanas (normal raisins)
• 65 gr (2.29 oz) raisins (large blond ones, if very large, cut into two)
• 65 gr (2.29 oz) currants (black)
• 50 gr (1.76 oz) dried apricots, chopped
• 50 gr (1.76 oz) glacé cherries, cut into quarters
• 40 gr (1.41 oz) mixed candied peel (orange & lemon), chopped
• 40 gr (1.41 oz) dried figs, chopped
400 gr (14.10 oz) DRIED FRUIT IN TOTAL (the above measurements are just indications, you can mix and match to your preferences as long as the total comes to 400 gr/14.10 oz. Last year, I substituted some of the raisins for dried cranberries, which was delicious too)
Mix all of the above and pour 100 ml (3.3 fl oz) brandy (cognac) over, stir every now and then with a wooden spoon and leave soaking over night.

The next day, mix the remaining ingredients together with a wooden spoon in a big mixing bowl

• zest of 1/2 large orange, finely chopped
• juice of 1/2 large orange
• 140 gr (4.93 oz) mix of grated apple and quince (2/3 apple, 1/3 quince. If you can't find quince, use just apple)
• 35 gr (1.23 oz) ginger in syrup, chopped
• tbsp ginger syrup
combine the above well, then add
• 2 eggs, beaten
• 90 gr (3.17 oz) soft butter (I prefer using butter to suet)
• 125 gr (4.40 oz) soft blond sugar
• 100 gr (3.52 oz) fresh bread crumbs
• 65 gr (2.29 oz) self raising flour (if not at hand, take regular flower and add a bit of baking powder)
add following spices and mix well
• 1 tsp all spice
• 1/2 tsp cinnamon
• 1/2 tsp ground ginger
left: the above ingredients mixed together, right: mixed dried fruit, soaked in brandy

Stir both together with a wooden spoon, mix well

Fill the mixture into a buttered pudding basin (1.2 liter, 40.50 fl oz).

Cover with parchment (make a double pleat into the middle first),

and then cover with tin foil, also with a double pleat.

Tie some string tightly under the basin lip, and you could also attach some extra string to make a handle. Steam for 7 hours, making sure to refill the evaporated water in your steamer if necessary. If you don't have a steamer, fill a saucepan with a couple of inches of water (so that the water comes about a third up the pudding basin), and put an upturned plate at the bottom of the sauce pan, to act as a little pedestal. Place a lid on the saucepan, and let simmer for 7 hrs.

Remove tin foil and parchment and cover with fresh parchment and foil in the same way as before. Store in a cool and dark place (i.e. an unused bedroom).

On Christmas day, steam for another 2.5 hours and turn out. You could also heat some brandy over an open flame, and pour over in addition.

Black on black has always been one of my favorite staple wardrobe combinations, it's so simple and easy, always chic, and a perfect backdrop for any scarf.

From the many emails I receive, I can not say which ones are more numerous, those who ask for advice on where to buy vintage or pre-loved H scarves, or those who came across Jan Goode's site here, and telling me about the wonderful experience they had buying from her. For those who have not come across her yet, here is her fabulous site www.its-all-goode.com Jan is one of the most helpful people I know, with an infinite knowledge of H scarves, and an amazing catalogue of them for sale. Oh, and she is 100% reputable. Thought I'd mention it, now that Christmas is drawing closer....;-)

Other mails are short and sweet greetings, sometimes consisting of just a photo. They never fail to brighten my day. The photo below arrived a couple of hours ago, sent by a Parisian reader... a snap of today's window display at the Rue de Sevrès boutique. So adorable! Merci, dear A-M.

And then there are mails which simply blow me away. When the pic below came through, my first thought was that DH must have secretly organized a professional fashion shoot for the MT Collection, but it turned out to be a holiday snap of the gorgeous VB, wearing her waterfall necklace on vacation in Barbados a couple of weeks ago.

It is one of my greatest joys to see MT Collection items in action. I am so often in awe of how everyone's individual take brings them to life in so many different ways. It would be wonderful to see more pics...of different people and places, and I would love to assemble a photo collage of them all. They can be full shots, still-lifes, or anything in between. I can crop them or mask out recognizable features, but I would need your permission to publish them, along with a nickname/ID as to how you would like to be credited. Scarf it Up - brown and blue

As the days are turning darker and shorter, subdued and somber colors are beginning to have a wonderful appeal. I always enjoy mixing blues with brown or black,

and opted for navy, taupe and chocolate basics today. Teamed up with a 'Courbettes et Cabrioles' 90 Carré, (wrapped around the neck once, and then knotted into a basic slide secured with a Grande scarf ring in honey), a blue/silver chain d'ancre enamel bracelet and ebene Kelly

After having been away quite a bit recently, it feels good to be home again, very much enjoying the late autumn, and slowly starting preparations for Christmas.

Autumn continues to dazzle with it's beautiful colors, each day brings a change in atmosphere as leaves slowly turn into yellow and orange, and then into brown or red..

Even on a rainy day the foliage looks spectacular, the dark and sombre light makes the autumnal colors stand out even more. In the past few days, the umbrella has become my most important accessory, but hopefully the continuous and heavy rainfall of the past week will soon come to an end.

Cashmere shawl restauration - Chantal Rammendo Invisibile

My favorite cashmere shawl, the Ex-Libris in black/naturel, has been in a sad state for some time, it acquired pulled threads, snags, and pillings,

and a small, but visible hole. It was mainly because of the hole that I stopped wearing it, for fear it would become bigger and bigger, hereby damaging the scarf beyond repair.

While too precious to be left in the drawer, I was also aware that a less than perfect repair job could easily ruin it forever, which left me in a dilemma.. The solution came when I found Chantal Roy, a born Parisian who is based in Italy's fashion capital Milano (she speaks fluent english, french and italian), and owner of Rammendo Invisibile, specialising in restoration of fabrics. Her unparalleled service has brought her clients from all over the world, individual customers, as well as high-end fashion houses who trust her with their after sales services (our cherished Hermès and the fabulous Loro Piana amongst many).

When looking at the before/after shots of the restored shawls and stoles on her site, I thought she could not have named her company in a more fitting way: Rammendo Invisibile is italian for invisible mending. Invisible mending has got a deeper meaning though, it is an ancient technique which involves tremendous skill, and consists of taking individual threads from hidden parts of the fabric (which sometimes get dyed or undyed to provide an exact match), and reweaving them one by one, stitch by stitch over the damaged area, thereby recreating the original part. The end result is like a miracle, as if the damage never existed.

When I received my cherished Ex-Libris back, I was blown away by how she had transformed it from a poor wreck to it's former glory. All pulled threads have been put back into their original position, resulting in the printed design being restored in all places.

I wish I could have taken better pictures of the miraculous transformation my Ex-Libris went through, a professional photographer could have done a much better job. Also, every little particle of dust and fluff looks like a snow-capped mountain! So please excuse the rough look on some pics, which is much exaggerated, but I preferred not to retouch any of them.

PART THREE - The hole presented a bigger problem, as the missing fabric included a part of the print, which happened to be very thin and in high contrast.

the area was too weak to be restored by reweaving alone, so additional embroidery was applied, and although difficult to photograph, the result is simply a 'miracle mending'.

my favorite GM is ready for many happy autumn and winter outings...

Capsule wardrobe # 50 - greys, cream and black

This morning I looked through the photos I took in Paris last week, and thought the one below captured the autumnal atmosphere better than any other. I was crossing the little park by the Rue de Sevrès, on my way to the Bon Marché department store (pictured in the background), when coming across this calm and beautiful sight..

Inspired by the golden light, and the grey, cream and blacks colors of the above, I picked the La Presentation de Chevaux for today, and folded it into soft pleats (again!), this time in a wider strip with fewer pleats, resulting in loose and relaxed folds

The vibrant and playful window of the Rue de Sevrès store could not have been in bigger contrast to the rich decor displayed at FSH, but of course much in tune with the colorful and lively atmosphere of the 6th arrondissement the store is located in.

Last Tuesday night, the boutique hosted Koto Bolofo's 'La Maison' booksigning event,

it was a truly fun and fabulous evening

Autumn splendor at FSH - revisited

Pleated bow knot - how to

To show just a certain part of your scarf in the bow (as in the video), or to achieve a bow with few pleats only, fold your scarf into a rectangular shape.

Turn the scarf around, so that it faces down, and start folding it into pleats.

The result is a narrow strip, consisting of just a few pleats

Pull both ends through a scarf ring as shown in the video above,

and continue with a simple knot as shown

For an alternative look, pleat the whole scarf (again with the design facing down)

Place one pleat on top of the other..

until you reached the end. This results in more pleats,

and a bow which shows most aspects of the scarf's design

With the ends knotted together (alternatively, you could also try a criss-cross knot, as shown here)

The wines in our area are slowly turning rusty, golden and red, and I have been wearing my richest autumn colored scarf, the Carré en Carré. To match the golden October light, I folded it in pleats, with the Brides de Gala and Tigre Royal facing up, tied in a new knot, the pleated bow knot

How-to: Pleat scarf into a rectangular strip, pull each end through one scarf ring opening, push scarf ring up towards the neck and secure ends in a single knot (video instructions to follow)

Favorite candles

The Cire Trudon candle manufacturer is just as famous for it's rich history as for the magnificent candles they produce. Established in 1643 in Paris, production never stopped, and throughout the centuries, they supplied the french royal courts, palaces and churches with their exquisite candles, survived the french revolution, and went on to provide for Napoleon's imperial court.

Today, Cire Trudon is the world's oldest candle maker, and everything they produce is still hand-made in France. The loveliest place to see the collection is the small and charming Paris boutique, located in Saint-Germain in the 'Rue de Seine'.

The perfumed candles are presented under glass domes, and when a customer wants to choose their scent, the domes are lifted up, so that one can inhale the concentrated essence captured inside the glass.

Flower knot 'how-to'

The Flower knot is not only ideal for small square scarves, but also a great for warmer weather, as the main bulk of the scarf forms the silk flower

Place your scarf on a flat surface, facing down

Belles du Mexique Gavroche 45x45 cm

Take two opposite ends as indicated,

and tie them together in a small double knot.

Take one of the remaining ends, and feed under the knot you have just created

Take the other end,

and do the same.

Pull both ends apart,

but not too tight

Turn the scarf around, so that it is facing up.

Puff out the folds of the 'flower' and place the scarf around your neck. Secure the ends behind your neck with a double knot, or with a petite size scarf ring.

Voilà!

You could also tie the flower around a pony tail, and I am sure there are more fun ways to use it. It is one of the rare knots which brings out the centre of a scarf,

The weather still refuses to cooperate with the calender, and the forecast shows there are more warm days to come...

For the time being, all big scarves will have to continue to wait in their boxes, while the small silks are coming out to play.. today knotted a Gavroche into a flower knot, which is not too warm around the neck, as the main bulk of the scarf forms a silk flower.

The weekend has been extra special and fun, and was greatly anticipated by DS as it was his 11th birthday. Following a party for his friends on Saturday, there were more celebrations today, as it's the actual day of his anniveraire. Even though we missed the sunshine yesterday, we had a wonderful time. Happy birthday to all Libras!

Chocolate birthday cake

2 tablespoons cocoa powder
2 tablespoons boiling water

175gr (6oz) soft light brown sugar
175gr (6oz) unsalted softened butter
3 eggs
175gr (6oz) superfine self-raising flour
50gr (2oz) ground almonds
100gr (4oz) dark chocolate, chopped into little chunks

In a small bowl, blend together the cocoa powder and water to make a smooth paste, and leave to cool.

Place the sugar and butter in a mixing bowl and beat together until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition, until the mixture is thick and smooth. Beat in the cocoa mixture. Sift in the flour and combine. Add the ground almonds and fold in carefully, then stir in the chocloate chunks.

Pour mixture into a lined round cake tin (26cm/10.25" diameter) and bake for approx. 25 min in preheated oven (180˚celsius/350˚F).

Repeat the process, so you end up with two cake disc. Sandwich them together with chocolate frosting, then cover the entire cake with frosting and decorate. You could also use other shapes of cake tins, ie a loaf tin to make a treasure chest cake, or a muffin tray to make cupcakes

Tapenade palmiers

A while ago, I shared the recipe of tapenade, one of my favorite 'apéro' dishes. It is delicious when simply spread on fresh and crusty bread, but as the evenings get cooler, I use it to make 'palmiers' and serve them while still warm.. a perfect complement for a glass of wine before dinner.

You need puff/filo pastry (I used shop bought and would have preferred a rectangular shape, but a round one works too), an egg yolk, and a bowl of tapenade (if you havn't got the time to make it yourself, you could buy ready made, or use another ingredient instead)

Spread the tapenade in an even, and not too thick layer onto the pastry,

and firmly roll up one end until it has reached the middle. Then do the same with the other side

Brush all sides with egg yolk for a golden end result, and put into the freezer for 15 min, which will make cutting it so much easier

Cut into as thin stripes as possible (if you can, approx 0.5 cm wide = 0.2 inches)

and place on a lined baking tray. Put into a pre-heated oven (210 celsius - 410 Fahrenheit) and bake for approx. 15 min (until golden)

bon appétit and happy apéro!

Instead of using tapenade, you could also try with sundried tomato paste, green tapenade, pesto or cheese. Have fun experimenting x

The windows were beyond stunning, but seeing this fabulously chic and elegant Madame was even more special, as I recognized her as Pascale Mussard when she turned around. She is H's co-creative director (along with her cousin Pierre-Alexis Dumas) and the great-great-great-grand daughter of H's founder Thierry Hermès. In January, I had the chance to see the innovative 'Petit H project' she created, a traveling sales exhibition with beautiful 'up-cycled', objects, handcrafted to perfection. Capsule series #45 - A late summer's evening

It feels good to be home again, missed you all. Recent times have been busy, and looking forward to going out for dinner with DH tonight.

During the day, temperatures are still very warm, but the evenings are getting cooler already, with the promise of autumn in the air. A shawl is a great companion for an alfresco dinner, it gives warmth as the evening goes on, while adding a touch of casual glamour.

Collier knot with 90 Carrés

I am currently abroad for a few days, and hope the remote posting will work.

While it is cool and fresh here up North, at home it continued to be hot before I left, with temperatures reaching up to 32 degrees celsius. Not willing to wait for autumn to wear my new Ex-Libris en Kimonos, I experimented further with the Collier knot instead. Even though many readers live in hot climates, have spring ahead or still experience warm days, for others autumn has already started. Originally I came up with the Collier knot as a cool way to wear scarves in hot weather, but found it works in colder temperatures too. One can add a blazer or cardie (thank you, Bienchen), or dress up a simple top for the evening.

To adapt the Collier knot to 90 Carrés, I minimized the volume by tying three simple knots into the centre, before attaching it to the top

As pointed out by Elaine, the Collier Knot method has more advantages than just keeping you cool. When threaded under the shoulder strap of your top AND bra strap at the same time, it keeps everything in place all day long (thank you, Elaine!!) I chose a top which I love, but don't wear too often, but as my dear friend T (hugs to you) observed, the Collier knot gives a little more modesty, especially when a neckline can be too low.

To get the scarf resting exactly on the neckline, I pulled the three central knots a little tigher, resulting in a longer 'necklace'. For a 'how-to' of attaching it to the top, please click here

Instead of three knots, you can also have just one middle knot. It leaves the ends longer (you need to switch from Petite size scarf rings to the Moyenne size), which makes it a great look for evenings too

Reader's style challenge - Collier knot scarf top

While experimenting with the Collier knot, I remembered a question posted by Alexandra on a previous blog entry

..I have an all important question for you about your various hermes halter top looks. How do you resolve the bra question? Have you come up with a closed back way to wear a scarf as top? I have worn some scarves this way with a blazer, but would love to have a mid summer solution, ie no blazer or cardigan to cover up. Ideas?

Much in the same way as the Collier knot, the Collier top only comes into minimal contact with the skin, and while the front looks like a scarf top,

the back remains covered

HOW-TO:

Fold your scarf in the basic bias, and secure one end to the shoulder strap of a sleeveless top or dress (click here for a how to)

and billow out the fabric

Tapenade and Bruschetta

Yesterday on the market, I could not resist the wonderful display of olives, and as we had friends coming over in the evening, I bought some black ones to make tapenade, a typical provençal appetizer and delicious accompany for drinks before dinner.

Tapenade is a simple and easy to make olive paste, named after one of it's essential ingriedients, the 'tapena' ('capers' in occitane, a language formerly spoken in the South of France and parts of Spain and Italy)

Ingredients:
250 gr black olives, de-stoned (make sure no extra salt has been added to them) = 8.8 oz
40 gr capers = 1.4 oz
30 gr anchovy filets in oil = 1 oz
2 tsp lemon juice (optional, but a lovely and refreshing addtion in summer)
1/2 glove of garlic, crushed
3 tbsp olive oil

Place all ingredients (except the olive oil) into a blender, and blend to a smooth consistency. With the motor running, add the olive oil, slowly and steadily. You can use less or more oil, depending how you like the consistency.

Then spread onto thin slices of crusty baguette or grilled toast or bread, adding a little basil or mint leave for decoration and extra flavor.

During summer, most vegetable stalls offer no fewer than six varities of tomatoes, but since I planned to roast them, I chose the oval Roma, as it is the easiest to skin

After dropping them for a few seconds into boiling water (until the skin cracks) and letting them cool off, the skin comes almost off by itself. Cutting them in half and placing them on a lined baking tray takes no time at all, and there is no need to add salt, pepper, herbs or oil.

The key for the best flavor is to roast them very slowly, with a medium hot temperature. These were in the oven for three hours, at 160 celsius.

For Brushetta, cut the tomatoes into thin stripes, dice the stripes into small cubes, and season with salt and pepper. Place a spoon-full of the mix on thin slices of crusty baguette or toasted bread, and add a basil or mint leave. You could also rub the cut side of the bread with a glove of garlic (cut into two) beforehand, and sprinkle with some olive oil.

Roasted tomates are also great with pasta sauce, tomato soup, or salads, as they give so much extra flavor.

The new Collier knot is perfect for hot summer days and warm and humid climates, as the scarf barely touches the skin, and the neck is left free of fabric.

The scarf ends get attached to the shoulder straps of a sleeveless dress or top,

leaving the back of the neck cool and free

HOW-TO

Beginn with the basic bias fold, then proceed as follows:

Place a scarf ring on the shoulder strap of your dress or top, and feed one scarf end
through the ring, coming from below

pull the scarf about 15 to 20 cm through

bring the end under the shoulder strap

and take it back through the scarf ring, this time coming from above

pull the end upwards to tighten the knot. You can keep one finger on the scarf ring, to hold it in place until the knot is tight

tighten further

Make a single knot into the center of the scarf, and proceed the same way as above with the other shoulder strap

Scarf rings give this a neat and finished look, but you can also secure the scarf to the top with a small double knot.

On cooler days, one can wear the scarf closer to the neck, and tie both ends into a small double knot behind the neck. For more variations, one can make the basic bias fold narrower or wider, or pull the knot in the middle tighter or looser. Or, try shorter or longer ends, depending on the neckline of your top/dress.

Over the summer holidays, there seem to be as many travel posts as scarf related ones, so keeping the recent trip to my later mother's native Finland short. I have spent many happy childhood summers in this beautiful country, mostly by the lake district, but have also very fond memories of Helsinki. The purpose of this trip was not a vacation, but we stayed for long enough to visit some of my favorite spots..

The Sibelius Monument, located in the picturesque Sibelius park in Töölö, honors Finland's composer Jean Sibelius, who has captured so deeply the essence of Finland in his music

Enjoying nature is my preferred 'sight-seeing' activity in Finland, and another beautiful place is the Kaivopuisto park. It reaches down to the shore of the baltic sea, where on a sunny day, the marina is a lovely place to have coffee in one of the many kiosks or cafés.

The main market square (kauppatori) right by the harbour is a fun place to go to, especially in the summer months, where the stalls display a wonderful array of forest fruits and berries. From there, a short ferry ride takes you to the Soumenlinna fortress,

a place rich in history, while offering long beautiful walks (it stretches over several islands), great views over the baltic sea, and plenty of opportunities to ride on cannons

The Esplandi is buzzing with life throughout the summer months, it's many outdoor cafés, concerts, shops and restaurant terraces invite people to enjoy outdoor life during the relatively short summer. On the north side, you'll find modern finish design shops, Iitala, my favorite, but also Marimekko, Pentik and Aarikka.

My most favorite church of all is the Tempelliaukio (Lutherinkatu 3). Carved into an enormous rock, it has bare, untreated walls, a most beautiful copper ceiling and a very special atmosphere. I used to love going there as a child, and even though it was crowded with tourists this time, it still remains a magical place.

Tomorrow I'll be going away for a week, and wish I had taken a pic for today's post yesterday, when we had blue skies and sunshine. This morning, I've been busy preparing the trip, and when finished, the sky got dark and heavy and it rained for the rest of the day.

A couple of days ago I went past H, where since my last visit, more 'beauties of the past' have materialized in the scarf drawer. It was a wonderful surprise to see Bolduc scarves in b&w and blue, it felt just as exciting as seeing the latest arrivals of the autumn/winter collection. There was also a Monsieur et Madame, in the same CW as seen it lately in NYC.

Bolduc in french means 'gift ribbon', and the one H uses to tie up the orange boxes is dark chocolate colored and has raised, off-white stitchings, print and logo.

The design of the 'Bolduc' scarf represents a Paris street layout,

where H's signature ribbons stand for rues, avenues and boulevards

The short doubts I had regarding the abundance of logos were swept away as soon as trying it on, the graphic pattern and cool and chic black&white look made my heart flutter with excitement. At the same time, it is truly lovely to have a scarf as a hommage to the late Jean-Louis Dumas , who designed the Bolduc in 1983.

The CW of the Monsieur et Madame scarf is (tabac/marron/vieil or, Ref No:002355S CW01), and since I know many of you are looking for this scarf, I had it put aside for me until I came back. If you are interested, please email me at: maitaicollection@orange.fr

Capsule series #44 - New York travel wardrobe style sheets

During the last couple of days, I've been playing 'paperdoll games' (thank you, Trudye!) with the NY travel wardrobe, greatly helped by Cecila modeling, and some archive pics

The resulting style sheets are only a part of all possible variations, I hardly used the blazer and long cardigans for example. Also, I did not get round to photograph the dresses and CSGM variations. The scarf knots are adapted to the hot weather and air-conditioned environments of our trip. Knowing it would be too hot for tying silk scarves around the neck, I only took one 90 Carré, and wore it mostly as a belt or top.

Enjoying a quiet moment with a Sudoku puzzle on the kitchen terrace. While dinner is all ready and prepared, there is nothing left to do than waiting for everyone to join for drinks, and to look forward to a shared alfresco meal. It is such a relaxing and happy time of the day.

New York - sightseeing hits with kids

When planning our trip, I wanted to make sure DS would get the most of the city's amazing sights and attractions, but it was equally important to find things particular fun for kids, as well as some calm activities.. full on sightseeing can easily get tiring and overwhelming after a couple of days.

A lovely calm place we all enjoyed was the Abby Albrich Rockefeller sculpture garden at the MoMA, just a few steps away from where we stayed.

and participated with great enthusiasm (he thinks slightly less of it in retrospect, as a Nintendo DS3D still has not materialised, lol)

MoMA's little sister, the P.S.1, can be reached by train (line No 7), which presents the great opportunity to make Grand Central Station the departing point of a short trip into Queens, which DS of course loved. We planned to have lunch at the Oyster Bar beforehand, but as it was closed we went to the Cipriani Dolci instead, which had the added bonus of overlooking the magnificent main hall of the station.

The outside space offers more exhibits, but also places to relax, watergames, ping pong tables and sand boxes, which makes it a great place to go with children of all ages.

Most of the original architecture of the building (a former school) is preserved, the exhibitions take place in former classrooms, and the staircases were left untouched

DS was absolutely dazzled by Times Square, and was keen to have breakfast one day at Planet Hollywood. It was a luke warm experience, we all preferred the 'local' breakfast cafe. An evening show was a must, and if we hadn't already seen 'Lion King' in London a couple of years ago, it would have been on top of the list. Instead we saw Spiderman: Turn off the dark, which DS loved. The flying, special effects and projections were stunning, and overall a great success, even though lacking in great songs. Another hit was the Harry Potter exposition at the Discovery Times Square, featuring props and sets used in the films. The perfection and attention to detail was truly impressive, and for those familar with the books or films it is a fun place to visit.

We all loved the afternoon we've spent in Central Park. We picked up lunch at a deli, rented bikes (you can get them with baskets too, but you have to ask), and did the big round. DS spotted a group of baby racoons on the way, one of the last thing he would have expected to find in a big
city.

The Intrepid aircraft carrier (and Growler submarine) on the west side of Manhattan was very popular with the boys, slightly less fascinating for me though. It was unbelievably hot that day, and when going next door to Pier 84, DS headed straight to the play-fountain, and cooled himself off by getting completely soaked, while DH and enjoyed a cold drink on the shaded terrasse of a cafe. From there, we took the Water Taxi (the hop on and off is great) for a 90 minute boat trip round the tip of Manhatten, and enjoyed stunning waterfront views of the skyline. A fun alternative would have been a Duck tour, but we did not get round to it.

We got off the Water Taxi at Pier 17/South Street Seaport, an area with great views on Brooklyn Bridge, and bustling with shops and restaurants

Looking the skyline from above was a must, and when going to the Observation Center of the Empire State Building, we also went to see the 'New York Sky Ride' (located on the 2nd floor) a motion-animated film which lets you explore New York by zooming through at breakneck speed (a definite hit with DS). In terms of best views, we preferred the Top of the Rocks' (on top of the Rockefeller Center). The ride on the lift up to the top is an attraction to itself, the ceiling is made of glass, and little blue lights illuminate the tunnel all the way up to the top.

Stepping outside the Rockefeller Center, you see the Lego Flagship Store, (according to DS, a kid's equivalent to FSH) which has the world's tallest 'Pick a brick' wall. DS, who has always been a huge fan of Lego, landed in paradise..

Another shopping favorite of DS' was the Apple Store on Fifth Avenue, and of course the legendary FAO Schwarz toy shop (right next door), both a little further down the road, on 767 5th Avenue

The Tiffany shop, only a few buildings further on, was a surprise hit. DS discovered the display with the Tiffany Diamond, (the world's biggest fancy diamond, a stunning 128 carat.) We were all taken by it's beauty and magnificence.

Because of the jet lag we woke up so much earlier than ususal, but made the most of it by visiting the most popular attractions in the early mornings (Empire State, Top of the Rocks, Statue of Libery), when there were hardly any queues. Another great help was to have purchased the New York pass upfront, which gives access to most attractions in a fast lane (no fast lane for the security checks though). Going on a hop-on-hop-off bus tour during the first couple of days is a great way to get an overview of a city without having to walk for miles, and you can get off at all sights of interest to explore them in depth. So far, we have done this in every city we visited with DS, and it has always been a huge success.

Capsule series #43 - New York travel wardrobe

When packing for our recent trip to NYC, the most important criteria was to select pieces which could be mixed and matched with ease, to achieve a maximum of different looks with a minimum of suitcase space. Limiting wardrobe colors helps, as well as leaving 'one off' pieces out. I distributed the colors (black, chocolate, khaki and beige) as evenly as possible throughout the clothing categoies (trousers, tops, cardigans, dresses, blazer), and avoided doubling up on item/color combos (ie no two black trousers, all four tank tops in different colors etc)

I knew it was going to be warm, so the focus had to be short-sleeved/sleeveless tops (personally I feel more at home with sleeveless tops, but the tanks could be replaced by t-shirts) and light trousers (I opted for 3/4 length cotton trousers). In the evenings we had dinner in air-conditioned restaurants, the only occasions I ever wore the black blazer.

The clothes

For the accessories I selected a color scheme too, starting with the dark brown Kelly, as it is my best bag in terms of safety. Adding the rest of the accessories in brown, black and warm reds and oranges, to go with the choice of bag and capsule wardrobe pieces. I knew it would be too hot to wear 90 Carrés, so I only took one, to be knotted into a top or belt. One of my favorite non H scarves (a light and breezy batic stole, given to me by a dear reader) and a mousseline GM were essential to cover up when entering airconditioned stores and restaurants, and great for sun protection. The two cashmere GMs gave an instant glamorous touch when dressing up for dinner.

A cool summer's day

A recent cold spell caused temperatures to plummet all over Europe, and even reached the South of France, bringing some unusually cool days. It presented a wonderful opportunity to wear a scarf around the neck, a rare occasion in the month of July. Interrupting the New York series for a quick 'Scarf it up' post, featuring the criss-cross bow knot and the Fleurs d'Indiennes I wore yesterday.

New York - the local H boutique

The H boutique on Madison Avenue has it's home in a 'bijou like' house, all to itself, which makes it stand out in an almost fairy tale way against the tall buildings surrounding it.

The NY counterpart of FSH's rooftop horseman held two 'Cheval de Légende' Carrés in turquoise/gold,

while the window displays featured beach wear, and Marcelina scarves in several CWs,

cute ideas for dog collars,

and larger than life enamels.

The fourth floor was home to a photo exhibition by Rinko Kawauchi's

and allowed a wonderful close-up view on the horseman

I very much enjoyed the visit, but as I could not spot a scarf previously unseen, I didn't take an orange souvenir back home. The scarf drawer held a surprise though, they had a Monsieur et Madame 90 Carré in the tabac/camel CW and one in pink/grey/black. It was also nice to see a few Picotins (GMs and PMs) on the shelves, as I have not seen them around in european boutiques for quite some time.

New York - part one

After a fabulous trip to New York, it feels good to be home again, and looking forward to sharing my favourite spots and activities over a series of blog posts. Kicking off with the essentials, where to sleep and eat. The London NYC hotel was a fabulous place to stay, and the location could not have been better, it was within short walking distance of many of the places we planned to visit. Since this was DS's first trip to NY, our main focus was on sightseeing. Venturing through a big city can get easily tiring, so it was important to find some calm and restful activities and places too, where one could restore energy. This being a family trip, it was quite different from previous visits, but I am glad to have seen so many of the fabulous sights this time, that were neglected on past trips.

The London NYC

We took DS to P.J. Clarke's for his first NY hamburger. Their classic american food was delicious, and it was fun to soak up the rich history of the place by looking at the black and white photographs hanging off the dining room walls

In the evenings DS got very tired (a combination of jet-lag and full-on days), so most of the time we would stay for dinner at the hotel and book a table at the Maze restaurant. Being a huge fan of Gordon Ramsey's, it was a wonderful treat to eat from his menu every day, and by the end of each afternoon, we were all looking very much forward to yet another fabulous dinner.

Growing boys are always hungry, but quick remedies can be found at every street corner.. DS of course loved the hot dog and pretzel stands, here with his favorite snack

After lunch, we spent an considerable amount of time at the amazing FAO Schwarz toy shop and the incredibly busy Apple Store on Fifth Avenue. Looking for some peace and quiet, we crossed the road and went for drinks at the beautiful Plaza hotel, a true oasis of calm. After enjoying hot chocolate and a glass of bubbly in the plush Champagne bar ..

we felt refreshed and stepped outside to admire the Circle of Animals/Zodiac Heads sculptures at the Pulitzer Fountain, just outside the Plaza. It is a traveling exhibition by the chinese artist Ai Weiwei, and we were lucky to catch it on one of it's last remaining days, by now it has moved to Los Angeles and will show in Houston and Washington DC next year. We had fun finding 'our' signs..

and comparing the different expressions of the animals. DS' and mine (dragon and rabbit) were right next to each other, and I could sense how pleased DS was with the rich decor and fierce expression of 'his' dragon (much in contrast with the more plain and docile look of the rabbit!)

Summer

In France, 'Les Grandes Vacances' (the two month long school summer holidays) started this weekend, and I look forward to sunny days and long evenings spent with family and friends, outings and trips (including those of a more 'sportif' kind, which are DS' favorites, involving tree climbing and canoe trips..it has been a year, and I hope I will be still up for it!)

On those days spend in the garden and by the pool..

I practically live in a swim suit, and sometimes, instead of changing for lunch, I just cover up with a light and breezy cotton pareo

..knotted into a simple tunic dress

and on occasion a hat to protect from the sun

For a 'how-to', please follow this link here. When you get to the last step, you can either secure your tunic dress with a belt (as done with the cashmere GM in the 'how-to', see pic below)

or pinch some fabric along the sides (gather as much fabric as you like, depending if you prefer a tighter or looser look) and tie into double knot.

The same can be done with any big format scarf, here with a GM Mousse (Fantaisies Indiennes) in combination with a waterfall necklace in the new écru/amber

Paris - an outdoor lunch place

On one of our recent trips to Paris, we enjoyed a lovely lunch at Ralph's, which is part of the elegant RL flagship store in Saint Germain. The building, a former 'Hôtel Particulier', dates back to 1683 and has been renovated and restaured to absolute glory.. finished in spring last year, it is since home to RL men, women and children collections, all beautifully presented on six floors. During the summer months, it's lush and green courtyard provides a most perfect lunch place. The calm and tranquil atmosphere (reminding me of the courtyard at the Hotel Costes) makes this a wonderful place to relax after exploring the lively and bustling streets of the left bank.

while the menu is classic american (the wonderful sourdough bread is one of my my favorites, by Poilâne)

It's been a busy week, so please excuse the mauvais quality of the snap shot below. It's been too warm today to wear a scarf around the neck, so wearing it as a belt instead.

Capsule pieces: black 3/4 length beige trousers, black tank top
Shoes: black ballet flats
Accessories: La Presentation de Chevaux 90 Carré worn as a belt and MT horn bangle
Scarf tying method: fold your scarf in the basic bias fold, place around your waist and secure ends in a double knot (or use a Grande scarf ring and the basic slide method)

I've been living in this top and trousers for days... a variation of the above to come tomorrow. Have a great start into the weekend everyone x

Dedicating today's episode to all who enjoy variation as much as I do. This morning I replaced the black trousers from the previous post with white jeans, while keeping the same shoes and accessories. It was a nice suprise to see how differently the look turned out.

Tried you halter top suggestion in one of your last posts, the result was too much material on the bust, because I didn't get the first little knot on the inside right. Then I tried your small scarf ring on the outside in a vertical position which worked! A tip for you?

Pinch some fabric..

and feed through one end of the ring

pull to gather more fabric

then feed through the other end and tighten

A tight and secure fit is important, if the outcome is loose, go back to step three and pull more fabric through

I have enjoyed learning from your wonderful tutorials and have mastered many of the knots with the aid of your excellent scarf rings: one in particular escapes my command. The waterfall knot I have tried and tried, yet still not been successful.

I don't have a mousseline, rather a 90cm carre which you have a picture of rather than a video, and am unsure where to pick up the third 'pleat' to thread through the two already secured by a scarf ring. I have tried lots of different places on the silk, but it's definitely not a waterfall effect I end up with!

Are you able to advise how to pick up the silk for this third loop?

There is nothing revolutionary about the updated capsule wardrobe pieces for SS2011, many items are carried over from last summer and winter, and those which have been added follow the same principle.. they have to be pieces which are reached for over and over again, they need to be simple, comfortable and make one feel at ease. Similar to a kalaidoscope, the selection below can be mixed and matched into a huge variety of different looks, while their neutral colours provide a perfect canvas for scarves and accessories to add their special magic.

The shapes and colours below are just indications, a blazer or cardie can be long or short, jeans can be boot-cut, loose or skinny, tank tops could be replaced by t-shirts, and shirts can be fitted, loose or tunic style... whatever suits the individual body shape and coloring best.

Coupons Indiens - MT TV

It was a lovely surprise to see a number of scarves from past collections turn up in the scarf counters this Spring. Not reissues for this season, but an extra allocation, they come in the orig. cws of their first editions.. I have seen Vif Argent, Coupons Indiens, Aux Portes du Palais and Aux Pays des Epices.

Definitely a wonderful opportunity to get hold of scarves previously missed out on, and I was thrilled when discovering Coupons Indiens. I love the design (have a Gavroche but missed out on the 90 Carré), adore the designer (Aline Honoré), and was over the moon to have found a perfect colour match to Ms Rubis Pico with the cw01.

From emails I received, many seem to be as excited as I about this opportunity, and Lilian asked me if I could show my new Coupon Indiens folded in both diagonal folds. As she suspected, the CI is another 'magic scarf' ie two scarves in one, a perfect candidate for the first episode of MT TV. Many thanks for the inspiration, my dear Lilian!

A trip to Paris a couple of weeks ago brought much inspiration to experiment with pearls, necklaces and beads. The expo on Tahiti pearls at the Place Vendôme..

..inspired to team up pearls with scarves,

today drawing inspiration from the beaded domes at the Palais Royal/Louvre metro station,

and changing the above look by replacing the scarf and pearls with my beaded Waterfall necklace, now finally launched.

Applying the 'pearls and scarf' how-to method to make summer scarf necklaces with strands of beads, a cool and airy way to wear a scarf when temperatures are getting warmer. The possibilities of teaming up different types and lengths of necklaces with varying scarf formats are truly endless, just make sure the necklaces have no sharp corners or details which could damage your scarves.

Capsule wardrobe #38 - Pearls and scarf with a twist

As promised, here part two of the 'scarf with pearls' mini-series.

Entwining the scarf and pearls into a silk and pearl necklace, here with a 70 Carré and a 72cm (28.35") strand. You can experiment with different scarf sizes and different length of pearls, or any other necklace that has a closure.

Capsule pieces: white jeans, black top and blazer
Shoes: canvas sneakers
Accessories: Modulation 70 Carré and black Birkin
Scarf tying method: Place your scarf around your neck with the strand of pearls on top. Start winding the pearls around the silk, then close the necklace. Ends secured in a criss-cross knot, (click here for a how to) alternatively you could also tie the ends together in a small double knot.

70 Carré (as above), but with a shorter strand (45cm/17.7") resulting in a knot closer to the neck
