Autumn

The arrival of Autumn is something I always look forward to with great anticipation. Our summers are quite long and hot and often reluctant to go, but once the wine harvest is finished and cool mornings have turned into crisp fall days, it is finally time to get the silk scarves back out of the drawer and rediscover the fun of knotting and playing.

Reverse basic bias fold with a 'Photo Finish' 90 carré

As above, with a 'La Presentation de Chevaux' 90 carré

Capsule pieces: grey patchwork wool trousers (available here), brown checked wool trousers, black top, rust cardigan, and beige sweater
Accessories: Hermes La Presentation de Chevaux (in gris and jaune) and Photo Finish 90 carrés, clic-H enamel bracelet in marron glacé, Karla bracelet in Caramel and Picotin 26/GM in Kraft.
Shoes: patent flats (grey Belle Vivier 25 and sunflower Ballerine U by Roger Vivier), brown ankle boots

'Carré en Carré' 90 carré in a criss-cross bow knot

Have a wonderful remaining autumn everyone xx

  1. :-) Dear MaiTai,

I still can't get into the fall swing (yet), but your pictures make me want to dig out big sweaters and beautiful scarves. And now I'm very much looking forward to the new scarf and shawl rings in vermeil, copper and bronze!

Have a very HAPPY evening :-)

    1. Dearest Happy, wishing you a most lovely autumn ahead! I only got my boots and sweaters out this week, it seems like no time I did the same for sandals and summer clothes!

  2. Hello MaiTai

Gorgeous post as always. Here in Australia we are enjoying spring and my garden has just 'sprung' to life with the jasmine flowering everywhere. This time of year to me in Australia is one of my favourites, the jacaranda trees flower, as do the agapanthus flowers.
I love all the autumnal colours in your post, though!
Excitingly, I purchased my first Hermes maxi twilly last week! Exciting times and I hope it is the start of a lovely collection.
Thank you for your inspirational blog!

  3. Fall is my favorite time of year! The scents, colors, light--it's a season I anticipate throughout the long hot summer, just waiting for cooler mornings scented with my favorite teas, wearing my favorite sweaters and cooking delicious soups. Welcome fall!

They go so well with the Fall colours and will be perfect to use during Christmas too! Which one do you think goes better wih yellow scarves, the one in vermeil or the one in or?

  5. Dear MaiTai, How lucky for me to finally have some time off to enjoy, amongst other thighs, your delightful blog. Over the past year, I have been super busy, so just fleeting glances I'm afraid, which does not do justice to your carefully prepared blog. Anyway, at long last half-term is here, we are enjoying spending some time in the beautiful Scottish countryside where the colours are glorious. Your photographs and thoughtful observations chiming with my own. Autumn is the UK has been pretty amazing, with many weeks of lovely sunshine - rather better than our summer actually. Really enjoying seeing your outfit choices, which as always are so stylish and chic. PS My daughter (15, she's a great baker) used your macaron recipe yesterday to make chocolate macarons - a delightful treat for the family in front of the fire for afternoon tea after a long walk through the forest down to the shore, so thank you! I'm resolved to making time to drop in to your blog as the year moves towards its end. What a lovely time of year, and what a super blog as always. Enjoy your weekend when it comes, and thank you! :) s

Very much hoping to visit Scotland one day, and autumn seems a perfect time for it. Kudos to your daughter for mastering the Macarons! The recipe involves patience and accuracy.. well done her! Wishing you and your family a most wonderful remaining vacation x

  6. Hi again MaiTai, whilst I am on your blog, may I ask your advice please. Although I have just rhapsodised about the beautiful Autumn, I am in fact in search of a casual summer shoe for a little holiday we have coming up. I'm looking at your photos of your holiday wardrobe and have been checking out the Castaner webiste - is this the little wedge espadrille that you are wearing BELI/8/CANVAS 600? It looks classic, stylish and comfortable - when you have time I would be so grateful if you could let us know? Many thanks and have a great day! :) s

    1. Re-bonjour dear S! I just had a look at the Castaner website... the Beli/8/canvas 600 is very similar to mine. It seems quite a bit higher though, and mine doesn't have a buckle. The Beli/6/canvas 600 has a lower heel, but I think it's still a fraction higher than the ones I have (in Castaner terms, the heels of mine must be size '3'). The name of the model I have has escaped me, but maybe it's been replaced by the Beli. I love absolutely love wearing them in the summer, they are super comfortable and always chic. Good luck!
PS. Here's a close up of my sand colored pair, hope it helps: http://www.maitaispicturebook.com/2013/04/spring-shopping-neutrals-part-one.html

In the meantime, I will be content, to visit her here! I always love your Autumn posts! Pics, prose and wardrobe are so inspiring!
Congrats on the new finishes for the scarf rings! They are lovely!

  8. Dear MaiTai, it is autumn here in the Seattle area, too. I cherish this lovely time as the light begins to fade from the edges of the day. Your new scarf ring colors are absolutely gorgeous. I don't know how you manage to look so beautiful in both warm and cool color palettes. You have the perfect complexion, dearest MT! A very happy autumn to you and your family.

    3. Ahhhh . . . autumn, my absolute favorite season of the year, even though it really hasn't made its arrival here yet. There are a few tinges of color here and there, so it is creeping in - but very slowly and definitely not fast enough to my liking.

MT, you look radiant and beautiful as always, and the new scarf rings are delights - lovely little autumn jewels!

And, Manuela, hugs to you. I find that there is no way for me to comment now unless I reply to an existing one, so I'm afraid that I latched on to you shamelessly.

Hugs to all the sweet and lovely swans,

  11. Dear Mai Tai., lovely post with lovely autumn colors. I am the only one who does really like autumn, because in Switerland the weather is not like innthe South.... Of course there are some beautiful trees when sunshine let us to see them! But not very often....
As usual you are stunning in any season.... and your new scarfs rings are perfect and gorgeous.

    1. I know what you mean- autumn CAN be colourful and stunning, and I'm surely a big fan of that. But we haven't seen the least bit of sunshine for all of last week either, just dull and grey:( Now, with time change, it's getting dark even earlier. But that only means we have to brighten up life by wearing colourful clothes and scarves, decorated with these amazing new shades of scarf rings... Immer ein gutes Händchen, liebe MaiTai:) Thanks for sending us sunshine with your wonderful scenery shots!
Have a wonderful autumn (or spring), dear fellow swans...oops, it's getting chilly in the water...

P.S. Best Time to light all those candles...

    2. Dear Katja, it has been unusually sunny in the Seattle area, but now we begin the usual Seattle grey, wet, dark season. :-( You are so right, we brighten our lives with beautiful accessories and give others something pretty to look at, too. A very happy Autumn to you in beautiful Germany!

    3. Dearest Monica, Katja and Fifi, - I know exactly how a dark, grey and wet autumn feels, I lived in a similar climate to yours for most of my life! After more than twelve years in the South of France I am still floored by the beauty of the Autumn light, which I rarely experienced before. The flip-side is that our summers can be much too hot. But as Katja said, there is something incredible cosy about the northern autumns.. nothing makes you feel more cocooned than to get back home after a cold and wet day, warm up with a hot tea, light candles, cook comforting food and have a glass of red wine. If only we could swap little bits of our climates!

  14. Dear Mai Tai,

South of France is a part of the country I wish to visit so badly, dreaming of Aix, Grasse, Avignon...Your pics make me want it even more. I am seriously thinking of to pick up a Tgv ticket next spring.

Was surprised a bit to see you, queen of the neutrals with red, which I think suits you very well.

May I ask what lipstick are you wearing?

Re scarf ring colour, agree with ladyjane... which colour to choose? I am still working on my first order in your shop.

Wishing you a good start for the week,
    Rita

    1. Hello dear Rita, - Thanks so much for the lovely comment. Hope you will be visiting the South of France one day soon!
Re the lipstick: it's a mélange... I usually fill the lips with a soft liner before applying lipstick. In this case I used 'Spice' by MAC (any other rosewood liner would do) and a rosewood lip color from Lancôme (Color forever # 256). It appeared a little bit too dull, so I applied a brighter and slightly pinker shade (Lustre by MAC) as second coat. I often tweak the colors this way and mix the different shades I have.. it's fun and results in a huge variety of colors!

    2. Dear MaiTai,

thank you for the tip re mixing lipstick colours. I ran into the bathroom to check but I did not have the products you wore, though I have a lot of MAC and Lancome in my beauty department haha.

  16. I was thrilled to receive my recent order of four beautiful scarf rings. The workmanship is exquisite and the colors and the lacquered finish are delicious; they work perfectly with the scarves I had in mind for them. I especially appreciate that the petite size is a perfect companion to the Hermès twilly. Reading the previous comment I may have to look at the bronze scarf ring next! All best to you, Stefanie
