Lavender harvest

This was last summer's lavender harvest. It is pretty hard work, as you have to cut them right down, for them to grow beautifully back the next year. I had a friend over, who loves lavender and so it was good fun despite. We had 30 bushes to cut, some of them were enormous.

The task ahead:

and many more in the back garden...

It was a hot and sunny day, so I decided to wear a straw hat. The Twilly added instant chic and my head stayed cool.

My preferred way to scent the house is to throw a freshly cut bunch into a basket and leave in a room, then move it on to another!

After all this hard work, we deserved a little break! I made Apricot Pie and we had some pink wine...seeing this now, all the pain in the back and hands is forgotten, I loooong for this year's harvest.

The brown rings you see on the table are made from wine cuttings. They are not difficult to make and can be used as a base for making all kinds of wreaths, lavender, rosemary, thyme..you name it!

And finally lavender wreaths!! I love to hang them on the wall in my dressing room, in the hall or prop them on the mantelpiece of the fireplace...

It was such a lovely day and making something out of nothing gives such a happy, satisfied feeling. Looking forward to the next harvest!

  1. Dear Maitai,
This is such a lovely post. I can't believe that no one commented on it.
I know this was several years ago, but still what a lovely way to spend time. Your apricot pie and pink wine made it even more enjoyable I am sure. Looking at the pictures makes me want to harvest lavender and spend time outdoors. Thank you for the post.
    Best,

    1. Dear Katarina, - thanks so much for the lovely and kind comment! I think this post got accidentally deleted some time in the past and the original comments went with it. So happy to have you joining in on the harvest. It's just the two of us now and we can have all the pie and wine between us!
