Capsule wardrobe additions

Early summer here has been the coolest and wettest for years, but it has had the wonderful side effect of producing wildflowers and green colours in places which normally would have been covered in dried out grass by now .

The Lyonnaise bakery in Nîmes

Meringues like summer clouds

On a visit to Zara last week I found three tops I absolutely love, all of which are still available online. The khaki bomber jacket is perfect for our current weather.. on a cool and rainy summer day a mix of subdued and lighter colors always works. The white and black layered tops are perfect with casual trousers, but also beautiful when dressed up for an evening.

From left to right: Bomber jacket (29.95 EUR), layered top (29.95 EUR) and long asymmetric top (19.95)

The pretty and flattering neckline of the layered top

Capsule pieces: layered top, khaki bomber jacket and black trousers
Accessories: Hermes 'Aux Pays des Epices' 90 carré and Picotin 22 in etoupe.
Shoes: beige patent leather flats (Roger Vivier)

Variation with an 'Ex Libris en Kimono' 90 carré

Capsule pieces: layered top, khaki bomber jacket and black trousers
Accessories: Hermes 'Ex Libris au Kimono' 90 carré and Kelly Double Tour bracelet in ebene.
Shoes: navy patent leather pumps (Roger Vivier)

The new additions turned out to be a perfect match for my latest scarf, La Marche de Zambèze

With so much rain recently, the South of France (and the view from my office window) has certainly never been this lush in June!

  1. You look fabulous -- as always. Love your new combos. Can't wait to learn more about those pajamas. I'm a sucker for a lovely set. Unfortunately it's hard to find a nice, simple cotton cami to wear underneath. Would it be too much to ask for them to have dainty straps? But not too skinny--sigh. I use the top as a sort of jacket -- pre-bed. Cami and bottoms for sleeping.

  2. Once again a very thoughtful, elegant and classy combination of fashion, your beautiful MaiTaicollection items and nature- which seems to be incredibly and unusually lush this year. A perfect way to start another week with lots of rain. Love your new Zara pieces, the jacket is so very cool, but you add a touch of elegance with your scarf and necklace. Bravo!

  4. How lovely and fresh Provence looks and you, as well. Great choices in those three tops, and of course, you look very chic, as always. As we like to say here, the devil is in the details. I am ammending that to the devil is in the accessories - a very kind, charming fashion devil, though, of course!

Love that new gemstone necklace, but I think owning four of them might just get me kicked out of the swan pond. Fifi would have my wings for sure. Sorely tempted, though, as usual.

I'm happy to hear that Provence has her head above water unlike poor Paris and here, poor Texas. I think we're in for a long, hot and wet summer - it will be 97 here by the end of the week. Could I please come over and park in the pool until October?

    Love to you,
    Jerrine

    1. Dear Jerrine,

I have already asked MT for office switch in exchange for some gardening work. From my site, I could let the pool over to you (i would go for Swimming in the sea).

We could share breakfast coffee and dinner under the olive tree. Let me know, if you would agree?

    3. Rita, I think that sounds like a stellar plan. Meet you at MaiTai's!

Sharing cooking duties sounds great, too, and we can alternate days for runs to the Lyonnaise bakery . . . yum.

      Best,
      Jerrine

    4. Jerrine and Rita, cooking and Lyonnaise bakery : you can order two sizes bigger than usual for the Pajama Party!

But I have one very pressing question--how will we accessorize?!

    7. Ladies, sounds great :-)
Do not forget le champagne. I am sure Mai Tai has a big wine cellar where we can keep them cold enough.
Note to myself: need my grey statement necklace for extra sparkling. Earrings are not for me *cry* but I will take a look at the bracelets.

      Hugs to all,
      Rita

    8. LOL, Catherine. The only time I really indulge in bread is in France, so I'll definitely need to order the pj's two sizes up to accommodate at least a baguette a day (and the wonderful French butter . . . and cheese . . . and chocolate . . . and wine - oops, guess it's three sizes larger now.) Bread is so boring in the US that most of it isn't worth eating and wasting carbs on. There's only one good bakery in the whole of Atlanta that even comes close. But every little village in France has a wonderful bakery. This is a huge injustice!

Glad you're in for the pajama party, Fifi. I'll share my necklaces with you.

And, Greta, how will be accessorize the pink pj's? Well, with pink bunny slippers, of course!

      Won't we all look adorable,

    9. Re: accessorizing pink pj. Recently I have bought nice sleeping masks from a swiss company (daydream via amazon) with swarowski cristalls in pink. Think of Audrey as Holy Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany. Together with the pink slippers.....

    10. Whoa, whoa...count me in for that pj party! If you want other food than baguette, cheese, olives, macarons and chocolate, I'd better leave the cooking to you. But I'm happy to take the part of the sommelière- I can pop Champagner bottles really well! And I will go the extra mile to the wine cellar- as long as I can still walk, lol. Might be dangerous in pink slippers, but I'll take the risk for the fun with you swans...

    11. Jerrine,
I feel so lucky, no matter if we have to order larger pyjamas!
So sorry to hear about your so hot expected summer. Maybe a MaiTai pretty pink tiny bikini would be enough in Atlanta?

    12. Yikes, Catherine, I don't want to scare the genteel natives. My teeny tiny bikini days are long past - not sure they ever existed in the first place. No, let's not go THERE!

Katja, so glad to hear that you have champagne cork popping skills. I'm all thumbs (pun intended)!

      Happy Wednesday, Swans,

    13. I should have known the swans would have a solution! Between Rita's snazzy sleeping mask and Katja's promise of bottomless champagne, I'm good. Bring on the pink jammies!

(Note to MaiTai--you might want to make sure you have plenty of these on hand. Interest seems unprecedented!)

    1. Dearest Trudye, you are so right. I love the way MT mixes pieces and comes out looking chic every time. Based on the collages, though, I think we all have that knack to some extent. Probably why we all flock together - we're birds of a feather! Wishing you a lovely week,

  6. Dear MaiTai, I love the view from your office window. I love those red ceramic tiles. Especially offset against the soft green foliage. Complimentary colours.

Your new "pretty in pink" line is adorable. We will become like hippies, going out in our pyjamas... very stylish hippies.

    1. Terese, I was flipping through Harper's Bazaar recently, and there was an article on wearing pj's out and about and even as chic evening wear. Apparently they're very in and have escaped the boudoir.

Leave it to MT to always be au courant!

This calls for a big pajama party,

    2. Holy cow--won't we all be fabulous, running to and from the bakery (on meringue runs, natch) in our glam pink PJs! I'm so excited to see this new addition to the collection! And I'll admit a slight addiction when it comes to pajamas--especially pretty ones. These have definitely piqued my interest.

Looking forward to more, as well as my invitation to the pajama party--

    3. It sounds good in theory, dear ladies, but I'm the type that still wears pantyhose and won't let my bra show under a shirt. So, it will be a warm winter in Copenhagen before you'll see me outside in PJs!
      Much aloha to all,
      Fifi

    4. Bras? What bras? I wasn't planning on packing any! Fifi, give us a week and a good stock of wine and champagne, and we'll make you forget panty hose and bras all together.

  7. Dear Mai Tai,

your pictures are, as always, simply faboulous. Would you mind to exchange your office with my office? The view is breathteaking and I would also take care of your garden.

I like your new additions. Khaki is such a nice neutral color.

    Have a gorgeous week ahead,

  8. It proves that when we have such a good taste, we can mix up, cheaper clothes with other ones and lovely accessories and it is still very classy
At least on you dear Mai Tai. But I am also very proud to arrive to do that. Its even a nice challenge to arrive to mix with taste. Amitiés

  10. Dearest MT,
I just love how you can rock classic pieces and feminize rock ones! Did you try the pink bomber?
You sent me back to my fifteenth when I absolutely wanted to wear a bomber, at that time they were all black and so « loose-fitting », my mum was horrified and told me I looked like an hot-air balloon! Don’t tell her but thirty-eight years later I have to admit she was totally right!
Looking for this nice pink pair of pyjamas and a morning coffee party!

    Catherine xx

PS my last comment on your so glam post is floating in the air between Monaco and Cannes… let’s see if this one will land at the right place!

    2. Fifi,
Aren't we lucky to shop good looking items at a good price? Have a look to COS for a timeless "with a touch of classy subtle fantasy" look. Accessorizing is always the secret (mixed together with our natural elegance of course!) No doubt you will be pretty and trendy with your bomber, with pantyhose and a lace bra ;-).
Have a nice week ahead too and I hope you will have some spare time for you…
      Rainy hugs,

    1. Blighty, my mother always ran us to school in the morning with a raincoat over her nightgown. She always prayed that the car wouldn't break down!

The pj's are really too pretty to hide, aren't they.

      Best,
      Jerrine

PS - I just remembered that I usually went to 8 a.m. classes in college with a raincoat over my nightgown, too. Must have been an inherited, genetic trait.

  12. Dearest Mai Tai,

This inspiring post, as many others before, show the possibility of creating lovely outfits with cheaper pieces. You manage it so well, my Dear, and look great wearing the two new pieces.
Congratulations on the new pyjamas. They are lovely. Can't wait to buy one!

  16. Dearest ladies and darling swans, thanks so much for the wonderful comments, they brought heaps of sunshine into a very busy time.

Thrilled that the PJ party planning is coming on nicely, it looks as it all the important points are already well sorted. Well done, Super Swans! Guess it leaves me with turning down the temperature in the wine cellar, in anticipation of a few crates of champagne. PJ's in all sizes are awaiting you!

I wish I could come back individually this time, but hopefully will make up for it on the next post. So very grateful for all the joy and laughter you brought, thanks so much everyone xx
