Plissé scarves - knot look sheet

I've been asked a few times about how to tie Plissé scarves, so here are my favorite ways to wear them!

Projet Carré Plissé

Ascot knot

As above, with ends tied together behind the neck

Left: Criss-cross knot, right: Criss-cross bow knot

Twist wrap

As above. Left: bow pulled tight, right: with a symmetrical and straight bow

Basic slide (scarf wrapped once around the neck beforehand)

Waterfall knot (picture from the archives)

Asymmetrical wrap

Cross slide

Fold your scarf in the basic bias, and slide a round scarf ring to the center. Wrap the scarf around your neck once. Slide each end through the ring as shown below.

Slip knot

Fold your scarf in the basic bias and place around your neck. Take both ends and slide your scarf ring towards your neck

Cascade knot - this is the most fun of all, each time the result is different! Try pinching the plissé in different places, sliding the scarf ring closer or further away from the neck, or giving the silk a twist. The opportunities are endless, and the outcomings the most wonderful surprises.

  4. What a wonderful post. I lunched this afternoon with a girlfriend who mentioned she has a plisse scarf. I will forward this to her. Now I wish I had one too! Perhaps there is one in my future. As for today I am thrilled to order your anneau ring in the ebony horn. I use the rosewood anneau regularly as it gives me a relaxed, casual look which works well in my mostly rural Hudson River Valley landscape. I look forward to playing with black polished horn!

  6. Oh, I've always wanted a plisse scarf ! I love these 'sculptured' 3-D looks, especially with the Cascade knot...now, I've just got to get a pleated scarf for our next Australian summer.
    Many thanks, Mandy

  7. Bonjour MT,
what a gorgeous post... thanks so much for your inspiration. I only own one plisse scarf
I think it is a little bit tricky to wear them, I ironed my scarf a little bit, so that the plissee aren't so thin and it gets more volume, so it is easier to wear for me...

Our stay in Provence was absolutely beautiful, in St. Remy it was so hot, so thats the result when you wish good weather, hihi

  10. Dear MaiTai,

Thank you for once again giving us much inspiration and beauty. Alas it is so hot and humid here that it is time for my H light cotton shawls which I adore. So easy to wear and care for, literally "wash, iron and wear".

  11. Lovely ideas! What is the expanded size of your scarf before it was pleated? I know you bought it that way, but I think they can also pleat it for you on request. :-) Emily

    1. It's a 90x90cm (36x36") carré, which is the only format the plissés were ever issued in. I don't know if the pleating service still exists, but I'll ask when I'm in the store next time :-)

  13. I've accumulated a few plissés, but can never figure out what to do with them. I can't resist them, because they're beautiful and fun and bouncy--sort of like a silk Slinky--and they come in those adorable little hat box-shaped boxes--but I've been stymied as to how to actually wear them. Very interesting and timely! Thank you, MaiTai!

  17. Great post MaiTai - I can't believe H have stopped making the plisses but wasn't there just one elderly gentleman who made them and I guess he retired? I could be wrong of course. This could bode well for resale values though:-) Anyway I very much enjoyed your post, thank you, SAx
