Postcard from England

It's been a while, and I hope everyone has enjoyed a happy and beautiful summer. We've been on a round-trip through England, from the North down to London, to the South West and Wales, seeing family and friends.

Back home, July and August are the hottest months of the year, and so it was wonderful to breathe some cooler air, and to walk across green hills and fields. We were so lucky with the weather, most of the time it was clear and sunny, and nothing beats the beauty of the English countryside on days like this.

My capsule wardrobe makes packing easy, and trusted combinations of staple pieces sometimes only need slight changes to adapt them to different times and places. The style sheet below is a variation of what I wore in Paris a couple of months ago, only that I changed the trousers from red to blue, and left out the blazer, which made it a perfect day look for a walk in the English countryside.

England part five - Capsule wardrobe episode #68

On the last day of our stay we went for a fun boat trip, departing from 'Rock' in Cornwall, on the River Camel. The pier had a great view over to Padstow, a small fishing village where seafood chef Rick Stein opened his first restaurant in 1974

Capsule pieces: white jeans and printed cotton top
Shoes: canvas sneakers
Accessories: Hermès 'Ex-Libris en Kimonos' 90 Carré, 'Elephant' enamel bracelet and Farandole necklace
Scarf tying method: scarf folded in the basic bias, wrapped once around the neck with the ends secured in the basic slide

In the evening, we crossed the river by ferry (the tide was high, which was lucky) and went to The Seafood Restaurant, which is one of the four dining places Rick Stein currently runs and owns.

The food was as delicious as the set up promised

Rick Stein's 'Coast to Coast' cookbook looked lovely and inviting, and is also available here

England part four - Cornwall and capsule wardrobe #67

Breathing and feeling some cool air was a wonderful extra benefit of our vacation in the UK. While the beaches in the South of France get very hot and crowded during August, the beaches on our stop in Cornwall were blissfully cool and empty...absolutely perfect for long walks. And with a fresh breeze blowing, it was perfect weather for wearing scarves too!

Capsule pieces: coral jeans and black top
Accessories: Hermès 'Coupons Indiens' 90 Carré, clic H enamel bracelet in black and Kelly Dog bracelet in black croc.

the promenades sometimes involved a little bit of rock climbing too

A picture book pretty coastline!

England part three - Wiltshire

While travelling through England we stopped for the night at the Beckford Arms,

a traditional country pub, run with energy and impeccable taste by husband and wife team Charlie and Chloë

The many personal touches make this such a charming place

The rooms are cosy and stylish, decorated in a palette of neutral colours, with beautiful linens and ultra-comfortable beds

Breakfast also included a tray to mix your own Bloody Mary. After spotting my favourite vodka (Finlandia), resistance was futile..

the egg timer's coloured sand seemed to be in full support of the olympic team,

and it reminded me of my new Le Laboratoire du Temps..

DS's egg turned out absolutely perfect!

The bar

The sitting room

Chloë arrived with an armful of fresh wildflowers in the morning, which were then arranged into tiny milk bottles and distributed throughout the place

She also has a wonderful line of bath and body products (Bramley), of which I have been a fan for years..

..so instead of having a new shipment sent to France, I brought a few bottles as a souvenir to take back home

It's been a wonderfully relaxing and comfortable stay, wish we could have spent some more time!
